  • Spooky Season Preparation

Don’t Let Your Home Turn into a Haunted House This Fall! As the nights get longer and the air gets crisper, Halloween decorations aren’t the only things you should be putting up outside your home! Before the frost settles in and those “boo-tiful” pumpkins start to rot on your porch, it’s the perfect time to prepare your property for the colder nights ahead. 1. Ghost-Proof Your Gutters 👻 Leaves are falling faster than trick-or-treat candy disappears! Clogged gutters can lead to scary water damage and ice dams later on. Grab your ladder (or your favorite maintenance ghoul 😈) and clear out those leaves and debris before the first freeze hits. 2. Don’t Let Your Hoses Hibernate Wrong 🌬️ Leaving your garden hose connected can cause water to freeze in the line and creep back into your pipes — a chilling thought for any homeowner! Disconnect, drain, and store them somewhere dry. Bonus points for coiling them neatly like a well-trained snake. 🐍   3. Keep Jack Frost Out of Your Outdoor Taps🥶 Shut off and drain your exterior water lines if possible. A frozen outdoor tap is no treat — only a costly trick come spring. 4. Light the Way for Trick-or-Treaters 💡 Shorter days mean darker evenings. Check all your outdoor lights, replace burned-out bulbs, and maybe even add a few solar path lights to keep the goblins (and guests) safe. A well-lit yard is both welcoming and less “haunted.” 5. Sweep Away the Cobwebs: Real and Fake! 🧹 Before you hang up your spooky spider webs, give your porch and walkways a quick sweep. Not only will it look inviting, but you’ll avoid slippery leaves and debris when the frost sets in. 6. Don’t Let Your Garden Turn Into a Graveyard 🪦 Trim back dead plants, clean up flower beds, and cover any delicate shrubs before the cold bites. Your yard will thank you in the spring — and it’ll look much less like a set from a horror movie in the meantime. 7. Keep Watch (Even While You’re Away) 🏠 If you’re one of the lucky ones flying south for the winter 🛫, make sure someone’s keeping an eye on your home while you’re away. A professional Home Watch service (like Moore Than Maintenance ) can make sure your home stays safe, warm, and worry-free, with no spooky surprises when you return!   So, this Halloween, while you’re setting out pumpkins and candy, take a little time to “de-spookify” your home for winter.  A few small steps now can save you from a real fright later! Stay cozy, stay spooky, and happy haunting from all of us at Moore Than Maintenance Home Watch Services ! 🏡🎃👻

  • October Maintenance Matters

A Cozy Fall Guide to Protecting Your Home October has arrived and it's the season of golden leaves, crisp mornings, and everything pumpkin spice. While you’re pulling out cozy sweaters and sipping warm drinks, it’s also the perfect time to give your home a little extra love before winter sets in. Think of October as your home’s “sweater weather.” A bit of preparation now will keep your space safe, warm, and comfortable through the colder months ahead. 🍁 Your Cozy October Home Checklist: 1. Tidy the Roof and Gutters Falling leaves are beautiful, but not in your gutters. Clear out leaves and debris so rain and melting snow can flow freely. While you’re at it, glance at your roof for missing shingles or cracks. A little checkup now prevents a frosty surprise later. 2. Warm Up Your Heating System Nothing says October like that first toasty evening inside. Schedule a furnace inspection, swap out the filter, and test your thermostat. Bonus Tip: make sure your carbon monoxide detector has fresh batteries before the real cold sets in. 3. Protect the Pipes Outdoor taps and hoses don’t like freezing weather. Drain them, shut them off, and consider insulating exposed pipes in those cooler spaces like crawl areas or garages. It’s the home’s version of bundling up in a scarf. 4. Seal In the Warmth Check windows and doors for drafts. Fresh weatherstripping or caulking makes your home cozier and keeps energy bills in check. A snug home is a happy home. 5. Safety and Peace of Mind Replace smoke and CO detector batteries, double-check door locks, and trim back bushes around entryways. A safe home is a calm home, and that peace of mind makes every pumpkin spice latte taste better. Another Bonus Tip: Our best practice is changing batteries on Remembrance Day every year. Why Home Watch Makes October Even Easier Even when you have ticked off the boxes on your checklist, homes still need care, especially if you’re heading south for the winter or traveling for the holidays. That’s where a Home Watch professional like Moore Than Maintenance steps in. From checking furnaces to spotting leaks, a trained eye makes sure your home stays as cozy and as safe as you left it. At Moore Than Maintenance Home Watch Services  in Nelson, BC, we bring both practical know-how and peace of mind to your home, so you can focus on enjoying the season.   Final Thought: October is a season to slow down, sip something warm, and enjoy the beauty of fall. With a little maintenance, and the support of a trusted Home Watch service like Moore Than Maintenance,  you can keep your home cozy, safe, and ready for winter. 🍂

  • Truth & Reconciliation-Land Acknowledgment & My Family's Connection to the Kootenays

The Place I Live and Work My name is Marcelline Moore (White) and I was born in Edmonton, Alberta. My father was born and raised in Fort Vermilion, Alberta and I was named after his grandmother. My father spoke of an orphanage that he attended in the 1940’s, but I am sure it was a residential school named St. Henri's. My mother immigrated from Northern England at the age of 11 and was a proud Canadian when she passed in 2016. My Father passed shortly thereafter. I only have a very small picture of the two of them together. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my father who was born and raised in Fort Vermilion, Alberta. We acknowledge that Fort Vermilion is situated on the traditional lands of the Cree and Dene peoples and that region has been a site of stewardship, culture, and community for generations. We honor the ancestors and elders of those Indigenous nations and recognize their ongoing connection to that land. My father brought me to the Nelson area when I was ten years old and although I moved away to raise my own family, I returned to the Kootenays to plant my roots and to work with the community that I love. We acknowledge that we are on the traditional and unceded territories of the Ktunaxa, Syilx, and Sinixt Nations. These lands have been cared for by Indigenous peoples for millennia, and we honor their enduring connection to this place. As we live and work in Nelson, we commit to respecting the history, culture, and rights of the Indigenous communities. Let us strive to build relationships based on understanding, respect, and a shared commitment to reconciliation. My father played a small part in building some of the major roads in the Kootenays and I still brag that he built the Bombi Pass. I grew up thinking that my father could fix anything, and I have always felt that I took after him in this way as I have a keen sense of how things operate. I love to tinker and fix things and with the age of the internet, I am confident that I can restore almost anything. My mother found her voice when I was in my early twenties, and she became a professional musician. The Library in the Hume Hotel in Nelson is one of the places she sang her Patsy Cline songs, and she was excited to call me from the hotel and to send me a picture of her band on the marquis at the Hume. She knew how much I loved this area. My parents loved to do many of the same things as I enjoy doing and they shared with me stories of their camping, gardening, and entertaining adventures. I often look out my window and wonder if they loved the mountains as much as I do. I can feel my mom around us when we are camping at Kokanee, Syringa, and Lost Ledge Provincial parks, especially when we are singing around the campfire. She would have loved the fishing, and nature walks that we enjoy in our little city of Nelson. Nestled in the mountains, we are surrounded by the beauty of the Selkirk mountains, the Purcell mountains and the Valhalla mountains. When I look out my office window, I am reminded of how gorgeous the Canadian Rockies are and at any time I can take a little drive, climb a mountain and feel like I am on top of the world. Nelson from Pulpit Rock My father would have loved the diversity of the people and the animals of the Kootenays, the social connections, and the many events of the area. When we were small, we went on CB picnics and were involved with many of the local festivities that the four seasons in this area offers. I can envision him walking beside me at the Road Kings car show, the Garlic Festival out in the Valley and the logging sports at the May Days events in Kaslo, BC. He would have got a real kick out of watching me break in the motor on our Zodiac boat and whipping between Davis Creek and Lost Ledge. I was always accused of having his lead foot, but it appears I have a rubber wrist as well. As I enjoy all of the beautiful areas that the Kootenays in South Central BC has to offer, I am reminded of my ancestors and the influences they have on my heart and soul. I wonder where their own footprints have wandered in the Kootenays, and I am grateful to have planted my own roots and call Nelson BC my home.

  • Why Snowbirds in Nelson Need Moore Than Maintenance Home Watch Services

When Nelson snowbirds head south for the winter, they dream of sunshine, golf courses, and warm beaches and not frozen pipes, break-ins, or insurance hassles back home. But the reality is, leaving your home vacant for weeks or months carries risks that can be costly if they’re not managed properly. That’s where Moore Than Maintenance Home Watch Services  steps in.   The Hidden Risks of an Empty Home Even the most well-kept homes can quickly develop problems if left unattended: Insurance compliance : Many insurers require documented checks every 48–72 hours  during winter months. Miss this, and a burst pipe claim could be denied. Water & heat failures : Just one frozen pipe can cause tens of thousands of dollars  in damage. Heating and plumbing issues are among the top claims for snowbirds. Security threats : An empty home can attract unwanted attention. Mail buildup, dark windows, and snow-covered walkways are telltale signs that no one is home. Property deterioration : From roof leaks to rodent infestations, small issues can escalate if unnoticed for weeks. What the Stats Tell Us Across Canada, there are about 1.3 million homes  left unoccupied at times. In BC, vacancy rates are among the lowest in Canada — with many communities seeing less than 1.5%  available rental housing. That means unattended homes stand out more than ever and could become a target for Squatters. The average cost of a snowbird home watch service  in Canada ranges from $50–$350 per visit , which is far less than even a minor insurance deductible for water damage.   Why Choose Moore Than Maintenance in Nelson? At Moore Than Maintenance , we provide more than just a quick check-in. We bring local knowledge, professional experience, and genuine care for your home. ✅ Detailed inspections : Inside and out, looking for water leaks, heating failures, pest activity, and weather damage. ✅ Insurance-approved reporting : Documented visit reports with time stamped photos to keep you compliant and covered. ✅ Seasonal services : Snow clearing checks, irrigation shutdowns, and other maintenance coordination. ✅ Emergency response : If something goes wrong, we’re here to manage it immediately.  If the power goes out, your home check app  won’t work either. ✅ Peace of mind : You can enjoy your winter away knowing your Nelson home is in professional hands.   Protect Your Home, Protect Your Peace of Mind Heading south this winter? Don’t leave your Nelson home to chance. Let Moore Than Maintenance Home Watch Services  keep watch, so you can relax and enjoy your time away. 📞 Call us today to set up your personalized home watch plan. 250-551-8297 🌐 Email us at moorethanmaintenance@gmail.com

  • Why Home Watch is Essential for Catching Water Leaks Early

Water damage is one of the most common and expensive problems homeowners face. Unfortunately, water damage often begins quietly, slowly and unnoticeably.  A small drip under the sink, a tiny crack in a pipe, or a leak around a hot water tank can go unnoticed for weeks if no one is regularly checking the home. By the time it’s discovered, the damage can be extensive. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, water damage now accounts for over 50% of home insurance claims , with the average claim costing more than $11,000 . In some cases, a burst pipe can cause tens of thousands of dollars in repairs, not to mention the stress of mold remediation, damaged belongings, and disrupted living arrangements. Irrigation Systems: A Hidden Risk One of the most overlooked sources of leaks comes from outdoor irrigation systems. If an irrigation line develops a leak underground, thousands of gallons of water can be wasted before it’s even noticed. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a leak as small as 1/32 of an inch in diameter (about the thickness of a dime) can waste more than 6,000 gallons of water per month.  That not only drives up utility costs but can also cause soil erosion and foundation damages. Here in the Kootenays, proper fall irrigation shutdown is critical. If sprinkler systems aren’t blown out before freezing temperatures arrive, water left inside the lines can freeze, expand, and cause pipes to burst. Repairing these underground lines in the spring can be extremely costly, and the damage isn’t always visible until you turn the system back on and discover soggy landscaping or water pooling where it shouldn’t be. How Moore Than Maintenance Helps This is where Moore Than Maintenance Home Watch Services makes all the difference. As a locally owned business serving Nelson and the surrounding communities, we know how quickly small leaks can escalate, especially in homes that sit vacant for weeks or months at a time. During our routine Home Watch visits, we check for: Water stains on ceilings and walls Drips or pooling under sinks and appliances Unusual dampness near water heaters or sump pumps Musty odors that could signal hidden moisture Outdoor issues such as irrigation leaks or damage from improper fall shutdown Catching these issues early allows us to notify homeowners right away, preventing major damage before it spirals out of control. With Moore Than Maintenance , you can rest easy knowing that your property is being monitored by trained eyes who care about protecting your investment. Our goal is simple: to save you money, stress, and heartache by spotting problems before they become emergencies.

  • Canadian Home Watch Month

First Annual Canadian Home Watch Month   It is September already and it has been a very busy summer. There are so many things to tend to, like irrigation, gardens, HVAC systems, window cleaning, pressure washing, storm system cleanings, and a full home watch calendar with vacationers coming and going.   September marks the First Annual Canadian Home Watch Month , and I would like to take this opportunity to talk about why that is significant. September in the North and especially in Canada, means its time to prepare for winter. We are gathering wood, checking window and door seals, changing furnace filters, cleaning gutters, harvesting the gardens and getting them ready for winter, changing tires, putting summer toys away, and hunkering down. https://www.canadianhomewatchgroup.ca/   September is also a great opportunity to educate people in Canada about the importance of having a professional home watch company watch over their home while they are away. The best way to educate is through experience. Here are some of the stories of why I started my Canadian home watch company, Moore Than Maintenance.   My closest friend was having issues with her insurance company as they were requiring new siding installed on her outbuildings, the deck resealed, new railings on the stairs to the home, and loose brush cleaned up around the property for forest fire prevention. They were given a time frame to get all of this done, and I helped where I could.   Another acquaintance was in the process of retiring and moving from Calgary, Alberta to Cranbrook, BC. Their insurance company knew they were in the moving process as the new home was recently insured. They left the BC home on a Sunday and returned on a Thursday with another load of their belongings. They never thought of turning off their water for the four days they would be gone, and had a pipe burst near the hot water tank. They discovered a couple of feet of water in their basement. They went to their insurance company to start a claim and was asked when the last time they were in their home. The homeowner told them Sunday, and their claim was denied as their insurance policy states that someone needed to be in the home or checking on the home within every seventy-two hours . This can happen within hours of leaving your home. Another fellow I know left his home to visit friends in the Okanagan for two weeks and returned to find squatters had moved into his vacant rental on his property. It took him over eight months to get them removed.   My sister was visiting me a few years back and returned to a tree in her garage. It had fallen in a windstorm. She had no idea how long it had been there as she has rural property. She lost a lot of family heirlooms, small equipment and memories, not just from the fallen tree, but the weather that followed and the rodents who moved in quickly and easily.   It was clear to me that there should be a way that people can have someone looking in on their property while they are away. I mentioned this in my virtual book club and one of my American friends said that it was very common in the USA and they call it Home Watch. After some investigation and a whole lot of research, I discovered the National Home Watch Association.   The National Home Watch Association is an organization that keeps home watch professionals vetted for the highest standards, practices and training to bring the homeowners peace of mind that their home is being cared for by the best home watch companies globally. It is my honor to hold the accreditation with the National Home Watch Association. It states that I am police checked, my insurances are thorough, and my training is ongoing in every area of a customer’s home. I also have a support system of retired plumbers, electricians, pool techs, security personnel, and maintenance managers who have started their own home watch businesses. https://www.nationalhomewatchassociation.org/   Moore Than Maintenance Home Watch Services is an important service in our beautiful tourist town nestled in the West Kootenays. We have a large community of travelers, snowbirds, vacation rentals, Air BnB and VRBO properties. We also have a large population of retirees that move into retirement homes and need to sell their larger homes. These properties also need to be checked regularly through the sale process. September is our awareness month.   At Moore Than Maintenance, we really do take care of your home as if it is our own.

  • March is National Home Watch Month

It has been quite a road filled with hundreds of baby steps to ensure that Moore Than Maintenance Home Watch Services is following all local laws, is fully insured and is accredited with the National Home Watch Association.   We first heard about a home watch business through a friend from Arizona where hiring a home watch company is common. We immediately understood the benefits of having a home watch company in our own area. We set out to investigate if there were any home watch companies in BC and what the process was for starting a company.   We first had to come up with a name. It was our son’s idea to play on words and use the two O’s in our last name Moore and create Moore Than Maintenance Home Watch Services. In June of 2024, we applied for a business name and number through BC Registries. We were excited that the first steps were completed so easily. We then stumbled onto the National Home Watch Association when searching reputable home watch companies. We found that the benefits of having a membership and being a part of the Association afforded us the knowledge, community and connections we were looking for.   While we were going through the processes and learning tools with the NHWA, we were going through the local processes of running a business in Nelson BC. We opened a business account at our favorite bank, ordered business cards, waited for a cleared Police Check, then secured a local business license with the city. We also went through many meetings and information sessions with Community Futures and our local business insurance company. At the same time, we were learning accounting procedures, QuickBooks and an incredible HomeWatch IT system. Concurrently, we had some amazing designs created for our business cards, website, flyers and brochures. All this was done to ensure that our customers receive the most legal and professional Home Watch Services available.   These processes also helped us to achieve Accreditation with the National Home Watch Association. An accreditation that we are proud to complete and display on all of our marketing modalities. Accreditation gives our customers peace of mind knowing that we at Moore Than Maintenance went through a vetting process that brings the highest home watch business practices to their homes and helps the homeowner take care of their property and assets while they are away.   We are proud to provide this “new to Canada” service to homeowners in our own hometown and the out-lying communities of Nelson BC.   Give us a call for your free in home consultation at 250-551-8297.

Whether you're a first-time homeowner or have owned your property for years, it's always helpful to stay informed and prepared. Here are some key tips to help you maintain the value, safety, and comfort of your home. 1. Stay on Top of Regular Maintenance Routine maintenance is essential to preventing bigger, more expensive problems down the line. Make a schedule for tasks such as cleaning your gutters, inspecting your roof for damage, checking for leaks, and servicing your HVAC system. Simple fixes can save you from costly repairs later. 2. Seasonal Preparation With each season comes a new set of challenges. In the spring and summer, focus on outdoor maintenance like lawn care, trimming trees, and checking your irrigation system. Fall is the time to prepare for winter—seal windows and doors, clean your chimney, and make sure your heating system is in good shape. Proper seasonal prep ensures your home stays comfortable year-round. 3. Energy Efficiency Upgrades Lowering your energy consumption is not only good for the environment but also for your wallet. Consider installing energy-efficient appliances, upgrading insulation, and investing in smart thermostats to control heating and cooling. Small changes can lead to significant savings over time. 4. Safety First: Fire Alarms and Security Systems Keeping your home safe should always be a priority. Ensure that your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and security systems are functioning correctly. Test alarms regularly, replace batteries as needed, and review your security system for potential upgrades. 5. Create a Home Maintenance Checklist A checklist is a great way to keep track of ongoing maintenance tasks. Break your list down into monthly, quarterly, and annual tasks to keep everything organized. This can include everything from checking your fire extinguishers to deep cleaning carpets and changing air filters. 6. Outdoor Space Matters Don’t forget about your outdoor spaces! Regularly maintaining your yard, patio, and any outdoor equipment like grills or furniture can significantly improve your home's curb appeal. Outdoor maintenance also includes checking for foundation issues and ensuring drainage systems are working correctly. 7. Don’t Neglect Plumbing Plumbing problems can quickly turn into a nightmare if not addressed promptly. Regularly check for leaks, inspect your water heater, and look for signs of water damage. Having a professional inspect your plumbing system annually can help catch potential issues early. 8. Hire Professionals When Necessary While DIY can be rewarding, some tasks are best left to professionals. Don’t hesitate to hire experts for jobs that require specialized knowledge, such as electrical work, large-scale plumbing repairs, or structural changes. • The 2024 NHWA & IHWA Conference - Calgary, Alberta

Collaborating With the Best in the Industry! When we arrived for our first Western Canadian Home Watch conference in Calgary Alberta, we were greeted like we were long lost family members. We discovered where other home watch companies were located and shared stories of how and why we got started in the Home Watch business. We heard stories about how one couple was denied insurance on their holiday home that they would eventually be relocating to, because they left the home on a Sunday and returned the following Friday. They were unaware that their home insurance on their vacation home stated that "A responsible person must be in the home within a minimum of every seventy-two hours." That mistake cost them thousands of dollars when a minor leak turned into some major damage. We learned some amazing good practices and bad ideas from retired plumbers, electricians, property management companies, real estate companies, security companies, and even pool maintenance companies. The combined Home Watch experience in that conference room probably exceeded 70 years of helpful information for us to put into practice in our Nelson BC home watch company. We discovered that there is an estimated one precent of Canadians considered snowbirds and that translates to 55,000 BC residents travelling south for the winter. 76% of Canadians have a second home in the Americas. Many of them are unaware that there homes may not be covered by their insurance policies while they are away. We all feel a strong desire and sense of urgency to educate Canadian's about home watch services and all that we offer as accredited members of the National Home Watch Association. At the National Home Watch Association we go through a vetting process that includes establishing a business in our community with a legal name, business license, proper insurances, police checks, bonding, ongoing training and best practices in the home watch industry. We are trained in emergency situations, safety, water supply sources, key security, HVAC systems, water heaters, proper tools of the trade, reporting and communication requirements. We knew we made the right decision becoming accredited members of the National Home Watch Association that was founded by Jack Luber. We met and became framily (friends who are like family) members with some of the most amazing professional home watch companies in the industry and formed long lasting relationships. We are proud to be part of a growing industry helping Canadians care for their homes while they are away. Moore than Maintenance offers Nelson and area home owners peace of mind and comfort knowing their home is in professional hands while they are away. We strive to be the home owner's advocate looking out for their best interests first and foremost. We believe that trust, communication and confidentiality is the three pillars of a professional home watch company and we stand behind our best practices, extensive training and preventative maintenance for our Nelson home owners. We are proud to bring professional home watch and home maintenance services to the Nelson BC area!
