It has been quite a road filled with hundreds of baby steps to ensure that Moore Than Maintenance Home Watch Services is following all local laws, is fully insured and is accredited with the National Home Watch Association.
We first heard about a home watch business through a friend from Arizona where hiring a home watch company is common. We immediately understood the benefits of having a home watch company in our own area. We set out to investigate if there were any home watch companies in BC and what the process was for starting a company.
We first had to come up with a name. It was our son’s idea to play on words and use the two O’s in our last name Moore and create Moore Than Maintenance Home Watch Services. In June of 2024, we applied for a business name and number through BC Registries. We were excited that the first steps were completed so easily. We then stumbled onto the National Home Watch Association when searching reputable home watch companies. We found that the benefits of having a membership and being a part of the Association afforded us the knowledge, community and connections we were looking for.
While we were going through the processes and learning tools with the NHWA, we were going through the local processes of running a business in Nelson BC. We opened a business account at our favorite bank, ordered business cards, waited for a cleared Police Check, then secured a local business license with the city. We also went through many meetings and information sessions with Community Futures and our local business insurance company. At the same time, we were learning accounting procedures, QuickBooks and an incredible HomeWatch IT system. Concurrently, we had some amazing designs created for our business cards, website, flyers and brochures. All this was done to ensure that our customers receive the most legal and professional Home Watch Services available.
These processes also helped us to achieve Accreditation with the National Home Watch Association. An accreditation that we are proud to complete and display on all of our marketing modalities. Accreditation gives our customers peace of mind knowing that we at Moore Than Maintenance went through a vetting process that brings the highest home watch business practices to their homes and helps the homeowner take care of their property and assets while they are away.
